According to a report by David Staples on the web site of the Edmonton Journal, a source says Jaromir Jagr is close to finalizing a deal that would see him join the Oilers either for the remainder of the season or at the beginning of next season.
Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini told 630 CHED's Dan Tencer that he wasn't willing to get into details on the specific rumour. "Are we always trying to improve our team? Yes," Tambellini admitted. "Am I gonna comment on things that are speculative? No, I'm not gonna do that. There's going to be an issue a day I think on things like this."
Jagr, who is playing with Omsk of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, would have to clear waivers before returning to the NHL this year.
Oilers forward Ales Hemsky was aware of the rumours when he spoke to the media at a charity event earlier this afternoon. The following is a brief Q&A excerpt:
Hemsky = "We'll see what will happen. I don't want to say anything right now."
Reporter = The Oilers tried to take a run at him in free agency this past summer...
H = "Yeah, they did. He was looking for a 2 year deal from what I heard and nobody gave him a 2 year deal and that's why he went to Russia. And now he's got some problems there so maybe he's thinking about coming back. I don't know, I haven't talked to him."
R = Would you like to see him on the Oilers?
A = "Yeah, of course. He's a great player and it would be nice to have him."
