PROPOSED CITY TAX HIKE NOW A 'SINGLE DIGIT'
The city budget going down to a “single digit” is bull! They do this every year! They come up with some ridiculous double digit tax hike and we scream bloody murder. Then they say, “Oh, is that too much? Okay, we’ll make it 9% then.” That’s still more than double the 4% inflation rate, but like good little sheep we quiet down and they go laughing all the way to their pet projects (read: winter festivals and new hockey arenas).

BIG PENSIONS, SEVERANCE FOR OUTGOING MPS
Regarding Jaffier - thanks for the lip service - now go away already and man up that the voters have spoken and Linda Duncan is in. As far as Taylor goes, wouldn't we all want a nice severance package. When the Charles Camsell closes we got 2 weeks for every YEAR - that didn't amount to a hill of beans when you had already put in close to 20 years and these people who are getting 77-78 thousand for 4 to 8 years. I think something stinks. I know there are more voters out there who agree. We've been doing client/patient care for years and don't get nearly the severance any of the alderman, or ay other elected city/government official. Give me a break - you'll lucky you a) get a severance as in my Dad's case 30 years with Gainers and Swift - did not get a penny!! And b) your severance is already more than the regular person gets. STOP whining. And don't give me the "well our work involves a lot of overtime". Every Supervisor/Manager works overtime too. That doesn't mean their severance is going to be nearly as high as Government. Give your head a shake ...

FUTURE PLANNING DOESN'T DETER STREET-NAME PETITIONER
What is the big deal about renaming a street. Like it is said in the report the way north on 97 is the way to the base regardless of the Anthony Henday. Would it not be a whole lot less expensive to rename a street than to build a statue. Council just doesn’t GET the idea behind the renaming if they think a statue would be better. Are the busses going to detour past the statue on their way back to the base?

NO TRUST FOR MAPLE LEAF
I am as picky about meat as anyone could possibly be. Trust me, you want to BBQ at my house, only the finest. However regarding the LISTERIA CRISIS I have to say that really there has never been a better time to eat products from Maple Leaf. I understand that sounds odd, and I am not saying that even I will run out and buy Maple Leaf products right now, however the reality is that LISTERIA was not just recently invented, it is an issue that any producer needs to have firmly in hand. I would trust that Maple Leaf equipment has never been cleaner than it is now.....I doubt that there is a cleaner producer out there now at all!. It's sad that things like this happen. In fact it's more than sad.....reprehensible even, however the reality is that only Maple Leaf is under the microscope. And while other producers are waking up, NONE are likely as motivated as Maple Leaf to turn things around. LISTERIA is among a host of horrible things that can breed if things are not cleaned right. So I say again, while optics make Maple Leaf the White Elephant of the Meat products industry...will ...

AFGHAN WAR MAY COST $18 BILLION: REPORT
I really don’t think that we have to worry about the cost (which should be of no consequence) of our armed forces being in Afghanistan. We are helping people become a democratic country instead of a religious dictatorship in which people have no choices. Although I have no relatives in the armed forces and I cannot imagine the ultimate sacrifice that some families go through, I still support our armed forces being over there, or wherever they are needed in the world.

NEW HOME FOR ORPHANED BEAR CUBS
I just don't get it.
A hunter was killed by a bear and his remains were found earlier this month. It turns out that the bear was a mother grizzly protecting her cubs. She was tracked down and killed last week leaving three cubs orphaned.
This is my problem. The bear was doing what a wild carnivore does... kills prey and protects their young. It's not like she was a pet pitbull that mauled a child. Yes, an animal that is supposed to be domesticated that attacks someone should probably be put down. But again, this was a WILD animal.
I feel bad for the hunter and his family but just don't understand why the animal couldn't have been left alone to take care of her cubs. Hunters take a risk every time they step into the wilderness and know that there are dangers involved but go anyway. Unlike police or firefighters that don't have a choice because it's their job. Let's say a mountain climber was killed after falling... are we going to take whatever steps needed to take down the mountain? Silly example, I know, but everyone has a choice. If the situation was reversed and the man ...

LISTERIA CRISIS DEEPENS
Our family will never buy another Maple Leaf product ever. Despite promises to the contrary that Maple Leaf now knows how to clean their plant, will you put the life of your son or daughter in the hands of these people again? Why is it that if a meat processor shuts down a plant and cleans it from top to bottom it’s then good to go again and we should all trust them? So essentially, this entire tragedy could have been avoided through proper cleaning of the plant. They didn’t go the extra-mile in terms of cleaning their plant, they were lazy and it cost people their lives. I say down with Maple Leaf, there’s zero excuse and the loss of downtime and profit argument doesn’t “wash” either, not at the expense of people’s lives. To all the executives in this business food chain (including Hygaard Foods) let this be a lesson to you, without concern for public safety, there are no profits, there is no business and you deserve to be charged criminally. I don’t know of a single person who LOVES Maple Leaf or its products and would stand in-line to buy them specifically over all others. When ...

My thoughts on Steve Harpers latest campaign announcement. Yesterday, just 7 days before we vote for our next government representative, Steven Harper unveiled his Economic Plan. Later today, or perhaps tomorrow Canadians are going to find out the true cost of our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Supposedly it gives Canadian’s 7 days to interpret his latest platform presentations. However, this also happens to be 3 days before Thanksgiving weekend, when a lot of families, and friends get together and enjoy, a Thanksgiving feast, last weekends at a cottage, buckle down and get ready for winters first calls at farms, and generally do everything except worry about our next government. I don’t imagine a majority of Canadians will be paying attention to politics, to what the politicians campaigning have got to say about anything. Steven Harper and his party that he rules with an iron fist have attempted to pull the wool over our eyes. Steven Harper was the last leader to agree to releasing the Canadian mission costs, and when Kevin Page announces tomorrow the war effort cost, it will give opposition leaders exactly 1 day to explain their position on it, and how it relates to their platform ...

FEDERAL "DO NOT CALL LIST" PROVES POPULAR
My initial thoughts were that this was a great idea. However, I am now wondering how many people will no longer be needed as telemarketers if 2/3 rds of the potential customers sign up to be removed from the lists. Being a telemarketer to me must be a very frustrating job but it is still a job. I have call display on my telehone so I can usually see if the caller is a telemarketer and hence have the choice of not answering it. I think (for now) I'll carry on status quo and allow the phones to ring.
Cheers

DANGEROUS DRIVING TRIAL CONTINUES
As I do not know the intimate details of the accident, my comments must be taken with a grain of salt.
On the surface with the information made public thus far, this trial is a farce. A couple of questions:
Why did the RCMP cruiser leave the scene to get a tow truck? Were his radio and cell phone both out of order?
Why did the bus driver attempt an exceptionally hazardous maneuver in trying to turn the bus around (without any lights on apparently) on the narrow two lane highway? I have driven truck for 20 years and I would not even consider a turn around in a car never mind a 50 plus foot bus. Why are negligence charges not being brought against the Bus Company and Bus driver?
It was a dark night with wet roads in which the RCMP left the scene of an accident without ensuring the scenes safety prior to departing to retrieve a tow truck that he could have easily radioed or called via cellular for. Being too impatient to wait in safety for the accident to be cleared, the bus driver turns the bus on a narrow highway with snowy ditches with ...

What is the Mayor of Edmonton thinking??
Mayor Mandel is complaining about the cost of the 23rd ave interchange. If he wants to save money for the city taxpayers, then why is he having streets on the South side of Edmonton, particularly Mill Woods area cleaned by blowing the dirt and small rocks off the streets?? These city workers have been working all day in front of my condo and will probably be there tomorrow.
Why not save the money so that these same workers can remove snow from this same areas?? This is a terrible waste of the taxpayers money!
When I looked out my bedroom window first thing this morning, I actually saw 3 city workers leaning on the back of their truck...just like the jokes we make about them.

TORY OFFICIAL SUSPENDED AS CAMPAIGN STUMBLES INTO NEW CONTROVERSY
Regarding casualties in general. Back in the 60's on a ten day NATO Exercise involving Canadian troops 9 lives were lost. Extrapolate that to the Afghanistan war and you can see casualties have been very light. Stay the course.

MISSING GIRL FOUND
This is a perfect example of irresponsible parents who waste valuable resources on finding their teenager when it is clearly their own negligence/discipline. [child doesn’t need permission to go out late at night…13?]. The parents should be charged for the police services used and honestly…this story isn’t worth the print in your [Web] news column.
