Mayor Mandel and Santa were on hand to help light up the largest Christmas tree we've ever had in Edmonton. (It's the largest Christmas tree in Canada!) The tree is 83 feet tall, with over 8000 energy efficient lights on it!
BrightNights was also launched, and there were choirs, free wagon rides, and a tent version of the 104th Street City Market.
Great weather today meant that the square was absolutely packed!
Mayor Mandel and Santa both get on stage prior to the lighting of the tree.

It's a bird, it's a plane ... no, it's a balloon and it's coming down on a city street.
Listener Lynn Perlitz says she couldn't believe her eyes when just before noon Sunday (Nov. 16) she saw a hot air balloon coming down between a church and houses on 88th Avenue and 163rd Street.
She tells iNews880 it was about three times bigger than the houses. Perlitz adds it even dwarfed the large church on the street.
The 90 feet tall balloon is part of Windship Aviation's fleet.
Lead pilot Lee Spicer says the uncommon landing happened because the wind died down. But he says everyone was safe because pilots are well trained to deal with situations like this.
About 15 minutes after it came down Spicer says the balloon was dismantled and taken away by the ground crew. (ccg, ly)

WEB EDITOR JEREMY LYE HAS HOW ...
Edmonton's all-news radio station and website - iNews880 - is fast becoming Edmonton's station of choice for getting the news as it breaks.
But we can't do it all without your help!
That's why we want you to be an iNews880 iReporter - and all you need is our inews880@gmail.com address, a cell-phone and you're in the running for the chance to win $88.00 every week!
Journalists in the field have always relied on new technology to get the story out - but more often than not, we have to rely on the only technology available (as I once found out for myself ..!)
Getting the story out by any means possible isn't anything new.
But what is changing is who is taking the footage ... and that's where you come in!
During the massive earthquake in China this year - the first reports weren't coming from regular journalists but from everyday people who happened to be in the "right place at the right time" - sending TXT messages, videos, whatever they could to the outside world.
And that's the power iNews880 wants from you.
If you're there when news happens, flip open your cell-phone and send us your videos ...

200 Hockey Moms were rewarded for their dedication and support of minor hockey as they joined Don Cherry at the Westin Downtown for a Luncheon.
These moms brave the winter weather, the cold stench of hockey equipment and the potential of a disappointed child after a losing game!
Don will be joined by grand prize winner Bonita Raju - whose son Isaiah nominated her to attend the luncheon - they also get to sit in the Skysuite tonight with the legendary hockey icon.
Reasons for nominating MY Mom:
I would like to nominate my mom as the most dedicated Hockey mom for a number of reasons. My mom has been a very dedicated hockey mom for over six years now, which is when she first put me into minor hockey. In those six years, she has managed some of my teams, made up banners, been my biggest fan, dressed crazy for some of my special games, sat in the box, helped with tournaments, helped write up and give encouraging words to all my teamates, gave me lots of encouraging and helpful words, entered hockey drafts for fundraising, and the list goes on. She always seems to ...

Guy Fawkes night in Edmonton
by Tony Ratcliffe
The history of Guy Fawkes night dates back to 1605 when 13 young men conspired to blow up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder on November 5.
Guy Fawkes was caught early that day, tortured, and executed.
That night, bonfires were lit to celebrate the King’s safety, and Bonfire Night has remained a tradition each November 5, along with fireworks and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes on bonfires. A short description of The Gunpowder Plot and Bonfire Night makes for interesting reading.
The celebration, in Edmonton, is organized yearly by the Alberta St. George of England Society. It was held at the Shrine Temple, 14510-142 ...
