Background:

Edmonton Police report a breakdown in communication with Corrections Services Canada, ahead of the alleged sexual assaults of two young girls.

Danial Gratton is charged in connection with an incident involving a 10-year-old girl Friday night, and another involving a seven-year-old girl Sunday -- the latter one spawning an Amber Alert.

City police now acknowledges the man charged is a high risk offender. And, Chief Mike Boyd says Corrections Services Canada didn't tell anyone.

"In this case, notification which would trigger our high risk offender section to conduct a risk assessment was not made, and no notification was made to the public," said Boyd during a late Tuesday afternoon news conference.

Corrections Services Canada and EPS are now investigating how this could have happened. Despite this, Boyd says the working relationship between the police service and CSC is a good one.

Meanwhile Edmonton Police say 44-year-old Daniel Gratton is facing further charges of sexual assault, sexual interference, uttering death threats, kidnapping, and abduction. The new charges stem from an incident last Friday.

EPS says late Friday evening, two 10-year-old girls were playing in the area of 137th Avenue and 48th Street, when they were approached by a man. Police say the suspect offered to take them for an ice cream.

They say one of the young girls recognized him from her apartment building, and ran back to ask for permission to go. In the meantime, the suspect allegedly drove off with the other girl, who police say was sexually assaulted.

Police go on to say the young victim was threatened, if she told anyone.

This news comes a day after Gratton was arrested as a result of a weekend incident. A 7-year-old girl was taken from a park, driven west of the city, and dropped off -- it was an incident that led to the Amber Alert. (bp, ccg)
