Meet the Emus: an Edmonton Aussie Rules Football Team
11:30AM

5/24/2009

Aussie Rules Football has a small but loyal following in Canada.

That includes some young ladies in Edmonton who are taking up the rough and tumble sport.

Kyla Fisher is the captain of the Edmonton Emus Aussie Rules Football team.

For those who aren't familiar with Aussie Rules Football, Fisher tries to explain the game. "I like to call it a cross between soccer, Canadian Football, and rugby. It's played on a gigantic oval, so if anyone's watched Cricket, it's that kind of field. It was originally developed as a way to keep Cricket players fit in the winter."

"There are about 15 girls now and about 10-12 guys who are just starting up. In Canada there are no fields big enough to play typical 18 to-side Aussie Rules, so we make it 9 to a side on a soccer field and try to make it into the shape of an oval."

A regulation size Aussie Rule Football field is 180-metres long and 160-metres wide.

Fisher adds for more information or to get involved send them an e-mail, EdmontonEmus@gmail.com
