Dramatic video from seniors complex blaze
Language content warning

6/2/2009

A 24-year-old Edmonton woman still can't believe no one was killed or seriously hurt in a senior's complex blaze early Sunday morning.

She says she and her boyfriend were the first on scene, at least 25 minutes before fire crews got there. And if weren't for them, it could have been much, much worse.

Brianne Boyce and her boyfriend were up in the middle of the night looking for an ATM ... and just happened to be in the area of 40th Avenue and 106th Street.

Boyce says one of the first things she noticed inside was that the fire alarms were quieter than she expected.

Boyce says she left shortly after crews got there because running around in the smoke and banging on doors had made her feel sick to her stomach.

The fire did 15 million dollars damage. Boyce says she went back to the scene later that morning and was relieved to hear that everyone got out safely.

A couple of local agencies are stepping up to the plate to help 160 seniors left homeless after a weekend fire that destroyed a wing of the Carrington Living seniors complex.

Nancy Beasley-Hosker, with the Red Cross, says the Salvation Army will step in on Tuesday to help the victims of Sunday's blaze.

The Salvation Army is now accepting donations of clothing, toiletries, towels and bedding at it's warehouse (9503 49th Street). You're asked to please mark items with "For Seniors Fire" and drop them off between 8:30AM and 4:30PM, Monday to Friday. (jg, ccg)
