There's a new Fire station in Edmonton. The Meadows station opened Saturday at 28 avenue and 34 Street. The new building is over 14,300 square foot building houses three fire trucks and two ambulances.
EMS Operations Director Joe Acker explains what it means to include both emergency services under one roof. "This is really only the second one in the city that's built like this. It's a terrific design from the EMS perspective. We work with Fire everyday to have this relationship in the close proximity to each other only makes sense, it's a terrific partnership. For the community, I think it's ideal. All of the protective services and health services are offered in one central location so that people in the community know where they need to come or where their resources are coming from when they call 911."
The new station is also unique in having a green infrastructure - the building has solar panels on the roof, which generate up to 20% of the energy required by a typical home.
Chris Ward is with Project Management and Construction for the City. Ward says the station is energy effient using natural light among other strategies. "High efficiency mechanical systems, low flush water systems & low usage water systems throughout. So it's a reasonably energy efficient building. And then one other aspect we have is, we do have a solar panel on the roof which helps to feed the electricity system directly off satellite. It's a bit of a gray day today but normally it would be producing more electricity from the satellite."
Interested Edmontonians can monitor the energy produced by the solar panels at City Hall.(blb)
