E.H.S.'s ''Broken Puppy'' visits shelter after life-saving treatment

An emotional reunion took place at the Edmonton Humane Society on Wednesday afternoon.

Three month old "Havanese mix" puppy, Humphry, paid a special visit to the medical staff who recently nursed him back to health from very critical condition.

On September 23rd, a Good Samaritan, who wishes to remain anonymous, dropped off a badly injured puppy at the shelter. The man and his daughter made the grisly discovery by the side of the road in north Edmonton.

It's believed the wandering puppy had been recently struck by a passing car and left there.

EHS medical staff immediately began work to save the little male pup. At that point, Humphry's future was grim.

Initial X-rays showed a small fracture in the puppy's hip and indicated that his injuries might be far more severe. Exploratory surgery showed that he was suffering from internal injuries to his urinary tract.

The battered pup remained in critical condition, fighting for his life in the EHS hospital, for three weeks ... EHS Staff began calling him: "Broken Puppy Humphry".

They knew the injuries were life threatening and they began to think he was not going to make it.

"It was touch and go. As with most critical injuries, more complications developed over time," says EHS Animal Health Technician Jessica Steinkey. "It took two surgeries and the medical skills of four different vets while in the care of the EHS to mend this little guy back to health!"

On the 17th of October, Humphry was placed up for adoption. He lasted only a few hours on that list, before heading to his new home with Edmontonian Salem Bryant.

"It was love at first sight," says Salem. "I just knew Humphry was the puppy for me, especially after hearing about the horrible ordeal he survived. I knew I was able to give him the extra TLC he deserved."

Salem and Humphry paid a visit to the EHS shelter on Wednesday to thank the dedicated medical staff who saved the puppy's life.

Shawna Randolph speaks for the EHS and says Humphry is just one of several animals that make it through the doors at The Edmonton Humane Society every year with serious medical conditions. She adds that the society is only able to afford caring for them thanks to generous financial gifts from the public.

Donations can be made by phone (780-491-3507) or by visiting the EHS's website. (ccg)
