WINNIPEG – David Asper has officially been confirmed as the next chair of the Winnipeg police board.
City council has voted to appoint the lawyer as the first non-council member to ever head the seven person board.
Asper understands one of the big challenges of his role will be to balance police interests with keeping costs low.
“I Think the new chief understands that there is sort of a natural tension” Asper said. “I look forward to working with them”
I don’t know that you can ever resolve it perfectly, but I think we can get to solutions that are acceptable to the public.”
The Chairman position has been vacant since February, when North Kildonan Councilor Jeff Browaty resigned.
Council also approved the appointment of businessman Brian Scharfstein to the board.
